Water Impingement Erosion of Deep-Rolled Ti64

چکیده
In this work, the Liquid Impingement Erosion (LIE) performances of deep-rolling (DR) treated and non-treated Ti64 were investigated. Various erosion stages, from the incubation to the terminal erosion stages, could be observed. A full factorial design of experiments was used to study the effect of DR process parameters (Feed Rate, Spindle Velocity, Number of Passes, Pressure) on the residual stress distribution, microhardness and surface roughness of the treated Ti64 specimens. The DR-treated Ti64 specimens exhibited improved surface microhardness, surface roughness, and large magnitude of compressive residual stresses, which were attributed to the amount of cold work induced by the DR process. Although DR improved the mechanical properties of the Ti64, the results showed that the treatment has little or no effect on the LIE performance of Ti64 but different damage modes were observed in these two cases. Evolution of the erosion stages was described based on water-hammer pressure, stress waves, radial wall jetting, and hydraulic penetration modes. The initial erosion stages were mainly influenced by water-hammer pressure and stress waves, whereas the intermediate erosion stages were influenced by the combination of the four modes together. The final erosion stages contain the four modes, however the erosion was greatly driven by the radial jetting and hydraulic penetration modes, where more OPEN ACCESS

Comparison of cavitation erosion rate with liquid impingement erosion rate
Both cavitation erosion and liquid impingement erosion are phenomena that can cause pipe wall thinning in power plants. The Code for Power Generation Facilities, Rules on Pipe Wall Thinning Management, was published by the JSME (Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers) in 2005. The code says that cavitation erosion shall be prevented either in the design stage or by daily inspection. On the other...
متن کاملINFLUENCE OF SURFACE NANO/ULTRAFINE STRUCTURE ACHIEVED BY DEEP ROLLING PROCESS ON PLASMA NITRIDING AND TRIBOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF THE AISI 316L STAINLESS STEEL
Influence of formation of surface nano/ultrafine structure using deep rolling on plasma nitriding and tribological properties of the AISI 316L stainless steel was investigated. Initially, the deep rolling process was carried out on the bar-shaped specimens at 15 cycles with 0.2 mm/s longitudinal rate and 22.4 rpm bar rotation. Then, plasma nitriding treatment was applied on the as-received...
متن کاملInfluence of impact speed on water droplet erosion of TiAl compared with Ti6Al4V
Water Droplet Erosion (WDE) as a material degradation phenomenon has been a concern in power generation industries for decades. Steam turbine blades and the compressor blades of gas turbines that use water injection usually suffer from WDE. The present work focuses on studying erosion resistance of TiAl as a potential alloy for turbine blades compared to Ti6Al4V, a frequently used blade alloy. ...

Experiments were carried out to study the effects of impingement angle and particle velocity on the solid particle erosion behavior of Bagasse Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites (BFRPCs). The erosive wear is evaluated at different impingement angles from 30° to 90° at four different velocities of 48, 70, 82 and 109 m/s. The erodent used is silica sand with the size range 150 – 250 m of irregul...
متن کاملTribological performance of polymethyl methacrylate as an aviation polymer
Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is one of the most popular synthetic polymers in aircraft windshields as an alternative to glass, due to its lightweight, high transparency and impact-resistant characteristics. The erosion behavior of PMMA is critical when used as an alternative to glass in an aircraft windshield. This paper presents experimental data on the effects of particle size, velocity and...
